16.5 + points, Jancis Robinson
Roche Pinot Noir 2017 Okanagan Valley
"spring and autumn in one glass"
Full bottle 1,329 g. Made by Bordelaise Pénélope and Dylan Roche from 21-year-old ungrafted vines. They call this their Tradition Pinot Noir but the T-word is nowhere on the label (a bit like Châteauneuf?). From the west-facing organic Kozier vineyard on the Naramata Bench. Aged in French oak barrels (20% new) for 14 months.
Healthy transparent garnet colour. Light nose but reassuringly savoury palate.
This is quite sophisticated and may not immediately appeal to those who expect more sweetness from their Pinots but it seems pretty convincing to me – even if its background may be more Bordeaux than Burgundy! Very appetizing and it really seems as though it will round out with increasing subtlety over time. Lovely freshness. A light hint of ferns and autumn leaves (spring and autumn in one glass?).
